Off-Duty Policeman Catches Offertory Box Thief; Many Similar Thefts Soaring Due to Poor Economy

The Austrian Times website reports today (August 24, 2011) that an offertory box thief was caught by an off-duty police officer.

The policeman discovered the 56-year-old criminal trying to empty an offering box at a church on August 22, police in the Viennese district of Mariahif said today.

Many thefts of offertory boxes have occurred across Austria in the past few months.

Police believe that the number of offertory box thefts is soaring, as people are still feeling the impact of the economic crisis.
