Cardinal Ordered to Court on Priest Abuse Trial; First Trial for a Cleric Who Moved Abusive Priest

The Irish Central website reports today (August 8, 2011) that a Philadelphia judge has ordered former Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, 88, to testify in court next month regarding what he knows about child sex abuse cases in his archdiocese.

Irish-American Monsignor William Lynn, 60 -- who was Secretary for the Clergy -- is facing trial on child endangerment charges arising out of transferring priests who later abused.

It will mark the first time that a priest not directly accused of molesting children -- but of moving suspected pedophile priests to different locations -- will have been tried.

Judge Teresa Armina has ordered Cardinal Bevilacqua to attend a September 12 court hearing on the issue.
