The Commission on Wartime Contracting has found that some $60 billion in U.S. taxpayer funds have gone to waste -- due mainly to poor planning, corruption, and fraud -- in Iraq and Afghanistan during the past decade, the Christian Broadcast Network website reports today (August 31, 2011).
In a report to Congress, the commission cites numerous examples of waste -- like an Afghani agricultural program that cost the U.S. $1 million a day.
The commission said government agencies need to overhaul the way they award and manage contracts in war zones.
Among the report's 15 recommendations are the creation of an inspector general to monitor contracting, and the appointment of a senior government official to improve planning and coordination.
