Italian Lawmaker Wants Prostitution Legalized; Says Prostitution Is Moral If Hookers Pay Taxes

The Catholic Culture website reports today (August 21, 2011) that an Italian lawmaker has called for legalizing prostitution in Italy, in order to regulate the profession and collect taxes.

Maurizio Marchetti -- a member of the ruling People of Freedom Party -- asks: "Is it moral for a person to work illegally -- earning 10,000 euros a month and feeding a criminal underworld -- while there are people who are working honestly and cannot get to the end of the month?"

He added, "Prostitution is immoral because hookers don't pay taxes. Tax them, and the moral problem disappears."

Marchetti believes that with at least 70,000 prostitutes in Italy today, the cash-strapped Italian government could use the tax revenue.
