National Cathedral in DC Damaged by Earthquake; Cathedral Is Evacuated, Masons Assess Its Damage

The Huffington Post website reports today (August 23, 2011) that at least three of the four pinnacles on the central tower of the Washington National Cathedral have fallen off, and the central tower appears to be leaning, as a result of today's 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered near Richmond, Virginia.

The pinnacles are the top stones on the cathedral's towers.

Richard Weinberg -- director of communications for the cathedral -- said the cathedral has been evacuated and stone masons are assessing the damage.

The Washington National Cathedral -- one of the tallest buildings in the city -- is an Episcopal Church landmark in the capital.
