British Jesuits Sell 7th-Cent. Gospel for $14.7M; Gospel Had Been Placed in St. Cuthbert's Tomb

The Catholic Culture website reports today (August 6, 2011) that the British Province of the Society Jesus has sold the Cuthbert Gospel to the British Museum for L9 million ($14.72 million).

The book was placed in St. Cuthbert's tomb at the end of the seventh century.

"It has been our privilege to possess this book for nearly 250 years," said a Jesuit spokesman.

He added, "Now, in order to answer more of the many demands on our resources, the province trustees have decided to sell."
