Exclusive: Israel Agrees to Talks with 1967 Borders; Agrees Aiming to Stop a UN Vote on Palestine State

In a dramatic policy shift today (August 1, 2011), Israel's prime minister has agreed to negotiate the borders of a Palestinian state based on the cease-fire line that marks off the West Bank, according to an exclusive Newser website report.

In a speech about the Middle East last May, President Barack Obama proposed negotiations based on the pre-1967 war line with agreed swaps of territories between Israel and a Palestinian state.

Benjamin Netanyahu -- Israel's prime minister -- reacted angrily to Obama's plan at that time, but now is basically accepting it, according to a report on Israel's Channel 2 TV today.

The main reason for Netanyahu's agreeing to resume peace talks based on Obama's pre-1967 border plan now, is because Israel is seeking to persuade the Palestinians to drop their initiative to win United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state next month.
