Austrian Bus. Owners Want Shops Open Sundays; Govt.: Sunday Opening Destroys Social Structure

The Austrian Times website reports today (August 16, 2011) that the Austrian government argues that opening shops on Sundays would "disturb the social structure," family cohesion, and recreation.

The reaction came after mall owner Richard Lugner and other business owners demanded the ban to opening shops on Sundays be lifted by a lawsuit in front of the Austrian Constitutional Court.

The government responded with a statement sent to the Constitutional Court. An 11-page writ signed by Chancellor Werner Faymann said opening shops on Sunday would disturb the "social structure and common recreational activities."

Christian Neuwirth -- spokesman of the Constitutional Court -- said that the court's decision would probably come in the spring of 2012.
