After months of silence, the Vatican yesterday issued an official response to the accusations from a former Vatican ambassador to the U.S. that Pope Francis covered up sex abuse in the church, the Christian Post website reports today (October 8, 2018).
Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, published an open letter yesterday on behalf of the Holy See, where he refuted Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano's allegations in August that Francis knew about abuse, but covered it up.
Ouellet also accused Vigano of "mocking and casting doubt" on Pope Francis' faith, which he said seems to him to be "blasphemous."
In August, Vigano accused Francis and other Vatican officials of having been aware for years of the serious accusations against former U.S. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick -- including his sexual abuse of seminarians -- and covered them up.
