The Pentagon today (October 26, 2018) approved a request for additional troops at the Mexico border -- likely to total over 1,000 -- to help the U.S. Border Patrol, as President Trump seeks to block a caravan of some 7,000 Central American migrants from entering the U.S., according to the Newsmax website.
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis signed off on a request for help from the Department of Homeland Security, according to a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, since the planning has not yet been publicly announced.
There are already about 2,000 National Guard troops at the Mexico border under a previous Pentagon arrangement.
Trump, who claimed "Middle Easterners" have infiltrated the caravan, said he was using the military to respond to a "National Emergency."
