Pope Francis today (October 12, 2018) accepted the resignation of Catholic U.S. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who was named in a grand jury investigation that detailed incidents of child sex abuse, according to the UPI website.
Wuerl, who had served as bishop in Pittsburg, came under fire when he was named in the August 14 grand jury report that accused Catholic leaders of covering up over 1,000 past cases of abuse in Pennsylvania.
Wuerl submitted his resignation to the pope last month. Today, the pontiff accepted it.
In a letter accepting the resignation today, Francis said Wuerl has "nobility" and said he would continue leading the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. until a permanent replacement is found.
