Despite the fact that Islam treats women as second-class citizens, Irish singer Sinead O'Connor has revealed that she has converted from Christianity to Islam and has changed her name, the Yahoo News website reports today (October 28, 2018).
The "Nothing Compares 2 U" star explained that her decision was the "natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian's journey," adding her new name was Shuhada' Davitt, replacing her name of Magda Davitt.
An outspoken critique of religion throughout her career, Davitt was ordained a priest by a breakaway church, but the Catholic Church did not recognize the ceremony, since it does not allow women to become priests.
The singer gained scornful worldwide attention in 1992, after she ripped a picture of Pope John Paul II -- and referred to him as "evil" -- during an appearance on the TV show "Saturday Night Live."
