The mayor of Riace, a southern Italian town known for its migrant-friendly policies, was put under house arrest today (October 2, 2018) for facilitating illegal immigration, according to the Euro News website.
Domenico Lucano was arrested after an investigation led by the public prosecutor of the southern town of Locri found that he was involved in organizing sham marriages to allow migrant girls to stay in Italy.
Police say they intercepted a conversation in which the mayor was talking about the case of a Nigerian girl who needed to be married off to an Italian citizen after her residence permit was denied.
Additional charges of embezzlement, fraud, and bribery have been dropped, police said.
