Israel Plans to Remove UNRWA from Jerusalem; Municipal Services Will Replace Palestinian Aid

Jerusalem's Israeli mayor, Nir Barkat, has announced that he will remove UNRWA -- the agency for Palestinian refugees -- from Jerusalem and replace its services with municipal services, The Globe Post website reports today (October 8, 2018).

UNRWA said such a move would affect its humanitarian operations and installations in East Jerusalem.

The agency runs schools and health centers, including the Shuafat refugee camp, where it says about 24,000 Palestinians live.

The U.S. ended its funding to UNRWA in August, a move applauded by the Israeli government but criticized by the Palestinians.
