Chicago Iraqi American Charged with Backing IS; Computer Engineer Encouraged Terrorist Attacks

A Chicago computer engineer and naturalized citizen from Iraq has been charged with using social media to recruit operatives for ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), encourage others to carry out terrorist attacks, and spread propaganda to support violent jihad, the Clarion Project website reports today (October 22, 2018).

Ashraf Al Safoo, 34, an employed computer engineer who moved to Chicago in 2008, faces a count of conspiracy to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization.

He holds a master's degree in computer science and was working in the IT department of a web development company at the time of his arrest.

Prosecutors allege Al Safoo was an active member of the Khattab Media Foundation, an organization with a "sworn bayat, or an oath of allegiance, to ISIS."
