The U.S. military announced yesterday that an American service member has been killed in action in Afghanistan, the NBC News website reports today (October 4, 2018).
The announcement from Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, provided no details.
In line with standard practice, the name of the person will not be released until 24 hours after family members have been notified.
The Pentagon says there are about 14,000 American troops in Afghanistan, whose mission is focused mainly on supporting and advising Afghan forces, as well as fighting al Qaeda and other radical groups like the Islamic State's affiliate in eastern Afghanistan.
