A large crowd of Greek Americans gathered at the White House yesterday to listen to an address by U.S. President Donald Trump at an event to honor the men and women who fought Ottoman Turkey for Greece's independence, the Greek Reporter website reports today (March 24, 2018).
Trump -- standing beside Thessaloniki-born U.S. Archbishop Demetrios -- said the tradition of the White House hosting Greek Independence Day (March 25) celebrations was one which would continue for many more years. "I'll be here for another seven," he told the audience.
He also recalled how America's founding fathers used the modus operandi of the Greek city states when they drafted the U.S. Constitution.
The crowd cheered when he mentioned Greece being the birthplace of democracy. "All around us here in the United States, we see the profound influence of Greek culture, art, and philosophy," said Trump.
