Airstrikes by Turkey in Syria destroyed important Christian sites dating back to the Byzantine era and other archaeological site from the first millennium BC, the Clarion Project website reports today (March 26, 2018).
The Turkish air force bombed Barad, nine miles south of the city of Afrin, where the Turks launched an offensive against the Kurds last month.
The bombing reported devastated -- among other sites -- the tomb of Marone, the remains of the cathedral of San Giuliano, and an ancient Neo-Hittite temple built by the Arameans in the first millennium BC in Ain Dara, known for its enormous basalt lions.
Former antiquities chief Maamoun Abdul Karim said that the destruction of Ain Dara was "the same level of atrocity" as the deliberate demolition of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Palmyra by the Islamic State (IS) terror group.
