Grand "Macedonia Is Greece" Rally Held in NYC; Greeks Want Bordering FYROM to Change Name

Thousands of Greek Americans held a rally in New York City today (March 18, 2018) to express their opposition to any use of the word "Macedonia" in the negotiations currently under way between the governments of Greece and the FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), according to the Greek Reporter website.

Archbishop Demetrios of America was present. Prominent members of the Greek American community addressed the crowd. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney made a passionate speech saying that "Macedonia was, is, and always will be Greece."

The rally at the United Nations Plaza was organized by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, the Pan Macedonian Association of USA, and the Hellenic American Congress. Greeks are opposed to FYROM using the word "Macedonia" in its name because Macedonia has for centuries been the name of a northern Greek province -- and the birthplace of Alexander the Great -- that borders FYROM.

This is the first demonstration on the FYROM naming dispute occurring in the United States. Massive demonstrations have already taken place in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece, as well as in numerous other European, Canadian, and Australian cities.
