PA School Punishes Girl for Not Reciting Pledge; ACLU Sues District, Violated High Court Ruling

The Raw Story website reports today (May 1, 2012) that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is suing the Brownsville Area School District -- located in western Pennsylvania -- on behalf of a middle school student who was scolded and given detention for refusing to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

The unnamed 13-year-old girl refused to recite the pledge because she was disillusioned with the way the United States was being run.

Her mother had complained to school officials, but the district upheld the punishment at a school board meeting.

In 1943, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that public schools could not compel students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, because doing so violated their First Amendment rights.
