Muslims Angry Over NYPD Surveillance Findings; NJ Atty. Gen.: Spying on Muslims Violated No Law

The Associated Press website reports today (May 25, 2012) that Muslim leaders in New Jersey say they are angry -- but are uncertain what their next step will be -- after the state's attorney general found that New York City police did not violate any laws in their surveillance of Muslim businesses, mosques, and student groups in New Jersey.

Several mosque leaders -- who attended a meeting yesterday with Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa -- said they were shocked that he found no violation of state criminal or civil laws by the New York Police Department (NYPD).

"This is a big violation of our civil rights," Imam Mohammad Qatanani -- the spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Passaic County -- said yesterday as he left the meeting.

Undercover NYPD officers and informants eavesdropped in Muslim cafes and monitored sermons -- even when there was no evidence of a crime.
