At least 120 schoolgirls and three teachers have been poisoned this week in Afghanistan, the Eurasia Review website reports today (May 24, 2012).
The incident -- which occurred in the northern Takhar province -- has been blamed on the Taliban, in its effort to shut down schools educating girls and women.
Perpetrators are believed to have sprayed a toxic powder to contaminate the air in classrooms.
Afghanistan's Ministry of Education said last week that 550 schools in 11 provinces -- where the Taliban has strong support -- had been closed down by insurgents. The Taliban is adamantly opposed to females attending schools.
