The Christian Broadcast Network website reports today (July 9, 2011) that 178 teachers and principals working in 44 Atlanta Public Schools -- who changed answers on students' standardized tests in order to receive higher salaries and bonuses -- have all been terminated, and could face felony charges for falsifying public documents.
The offenses include teachers changing incorrect test answers -- sometimes during weekends at "erasure parties" -- and teachers pointing out the correct answers to students during test times.
"This is one of the greatest tragedies to affect this city in modern history," Atlanta City Councilor Michael Julian Bond said.
"Testing and results and targets being reached became more important than actual learning on the part of children," Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said.
