The All Voices website reports today (July 1, 2011) that an ancient Roman fresco of St. Paul -- which scholars say is some 1,400 years old -- has been discovered in the ancient Roman catacomb.
It was found during a restoration at the Catacombs of San Gennaro (Saint Januarius) in the southern Italian port city of Naples in Campania, by experts from the Pontifical Commission of Sacred Art.
The announcement was made this week on the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul -- a traditional holiday in Italy.
As a Roman Jew who was born in Tarsus in modern-day Turkey, St. Paul started out persecuting Christians, but later became one of the greatest influences in the Christian Church, after seeing a shining light on the road to Damascus.
