Syrian security forces opened fire at a funeral procession today (July 19, 2011), killing at least 10 people in a city that has been besieged for several days by some of the most serious violence yet in Syria's four-month-old uprising, according to the Associated Press website.
Today's killings bring the death toll in the city of Homs to about 50 people in the past three days.
A mother of one of the men being buried was believed to be among the victims in today's killings.
Human rights groups say more than 1,600 people -- most of them unarmed civilians -- have been killed in Syria during the past four months by President Bashar Assad's crackdown on a largely peaceful protest movement.
