Fire Badly Damages NYC Orthodox Synagogue; Roof Collapses, Top Floors Damaged Last Night

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency website reports today (July 12, 2011) that a fire -- which began last night at about 8:30 p.m. -- has badly damaged Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun, one of New York City's most prominent synagogues.

The fire caused the massive synagogue's roof to collapse and severely damaged the building's top floors.

The fire was brought under control one hour after it began. Its cause has not yet been determined.

Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun is an Orthodox synagogue and one of the city's most prominent Jewish congregations. It is led by Rabbi Haskel Lookstein -- a major figure in American Modern Orthodoxy.
