Millions of Muslims Celebrate Ramadan on Aug. 1; No Food, Drink for Adults between Dawn and Dusk

The Islam Online website reports today (July 31, 2011) that millions of Muslims worldwide will celebrate the beginning of the holy fasting month of Ramadan on Monday, August 1.

In Ramadan, adult Muslims -- except for the sick and those traveling -- abstain from food, drink, smoking, and sex between dawn and sunset.

Muslims dedicate their time during holy month to be closer to Allah through prayers, self-restraint, and good deeds.

Many men perform i tikaf (spiritual retreat), spending the last 10 days of the month exclusively in the mosque.
