The Orthodox Church Info blog reports today (July 14, 2011) that Pope Shenouda III -- the head of Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church -- this week slammed former President Hosni Mubarak's regime for the way it handled sectarian issues.
Shenouda's remarks came during a meeting on July 11 with European members of parliament and diplomats.
Shenouda told his guests that the condition of Egypt's Copts has improved, following the January unrest that toppled Mubarak.
The pope said that for 30 years -- while Mubarak was president -- the Egyptian church struggled futilely to get the former regime to issue a unified law for constructing places of worship, while the current Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has already approved this law.
