New Dress Code Is Implemented for Dutch Police; Bans Wearing Religious Symbols Such as Crosses

A new dress code for police in the Netherlands -- which bans religious symbols such as crosses and headscarves -- went into effect today (July 13, 2011), according to the Dutch News website.

The dress code is designed to ensure "lifestyle neutrality," meaning police are there for all citizens, so obvious religious affiliations are not desirable.

Large tattoos and unusual piercings are no longer acceptable. Police officers with large tattoos will have to cover them up.

Originally, the new dress code was to have been enshrined in law, but the police union -- determined to provide for some flexibility in the rules -- objected, and this resulted in the establishment of a code of conduct instead.
