Atheists Want Atheist Chaplains for US Military; Claim Troops Need Them for Counseling, Support

The Christian Broadcast Network website reports today (July 5, 2011) that David Silverman -- president of American Atheists -- says the U.S. military needs atheist chaplains that atheist troops can turn to for counseling and moral support.

Silverman -- who was raised Jewish -- said he decided at an early age that God did not exist.

Atheist groups have been pushing for the appointment of one of their own to the ranks of the chaplaincy in recent years.

Atheists hope to be recognized officially by the military, which would mean they could raise money and meet on military bases, distribute literature, and advertise their events.
