Many Coptic Christian Women Abused in Egypt; Human Rights Org.: 800 Kidnaped, Raped in 2 Yrs.

The Orthodox Church Info blog reports today (July 24, 2011) that the U.S. Helsinki Commission gathered in Washington, D.C. on July 22 to discuss the increase in violence against Coptic Orthodox Christians in Egypt -- specifically young women.

Jean Maher -- president of the France-based Egyptian Union for Human Rights Organization -- said that some 800 Coptic Christian women have been kidnaped, raped, and forced to convert to Islam since 2009.

He said one of the greatest contributors to the abductions is the inactivity toward them of the Egyptian police.

Maher added that most families of victims are already reluctant to come forward, because taking away a woman's virginity also strips the family of its honor.
