Twin suicide bombings rocked Baghdad today (January 15, 2018), killing 38 people in the deadliest attack since Iraq declared victory over the Islamic State (IS) terror group last month, according to the AP News website.
The bombers targeted the bustling Tayran Square, in the heart of the capital, setting off their explosive vests among laborers and street vendors during the morning rush hour.
More than 100 people were wounded, according to police and hospital officials.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but they bore the hallmarks of IS. Although Iraqi forces drove IS from all the territory it once held, the militant group is expected to carry out terrorist attacks in the country from time to time.
