Greeks Protest "Macedonia" in Name of FYROM; Its Name Blocks FYROM from Joining NATO, EU

Thousands of Greeks turned out in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki yesterday to show their anger over the use of the name "Macedonia" by neighboring FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), as Athens and Skopje seek a solution to the long-running row, the Euro News website reports today (January 22, 2018).

Greece says the title "Macedonia" by FYROM implies a territorial claim over its bordering northern province of the same name, where Alexander the Great was born. (FYROM has built statues of Alexander the Great in its capital of Skopje in a delusional effort to honor him as a Slav, when in fact historians agree that Alexander was of Greek heritage, not Slavic.)

Pantelis Paschalidis, a member of Naoussa Cultural Club said: "There is no reason to discuss the self-evident. The Slavs came a long time after Alexander the Great and they have nothing to do with the culture of Greece."

This month Athens and Skopje agreed to renew efforts to settle the 25-year-old name dispute, which has blocked the ex-Yugoslav republic's attempt to join NATO and the European Union (EU).
