At least 18 people were killed today (January 7, 2018) in a car bomb blast in Syria's largest rebel-held city of Idlib, according to the Newsmax website.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says a car bomb was detonated this evening in Idlib, the capital of a province with same name.
Photos of the blast show heavy damage along a major avenue in the city, with several buildings damaged and vehicles overturned.
The Syrian military has assigned one of its top commanders to lead the offensive into Idlib, the last major stronghold for rebels in Syria, as the country's ongoing civil war enters its seventh year.
