Despite being seen as favoring Israel over Palestinians in his effort to establish a peace settlement for the Middle East -- as indicated by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital -- President Donald Trump today (February 11, 2018) questioned Israel's interest in making peace, because of its settlements in the West Bank, according to the AP website.
In an interview published today in the Israel Hayon daily, Trump also cast doubt on the Palestinians' desire to strike a peace deal.
"Right now, I would say the Palestinians are not looking to make peace... And I'm not necessarily sure that Israel is looking to make peace..." Trump said.
Israel Hayon is owned by American billionaire Sheldon Adelson, a Trump backer and a supporter of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In the interview, Trump criticized Israel's West Bank settlements, which Palestinians and most of the international community view as illegal obstacles to peace, since Israel wants to maintain control of them.
