Incumbent Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades won a second five-year term today (February 4, 2018), gaining 55.9 present of the vote to 44 percent secured by left-wing challenger Stavros Malas, according to the Ekathimerini (Greek) website.
Anastasiades, 71, has been widely credited with steering the Cypriot economy to recovery after its economy was battered in 2013 due to its exposure to the debt crisis in Greece.
Cyprus has been split since 1974 when Muslim Turks seized the northern third of the predominantly Greek Orthodox Christian island.
Anastasiades came close last year to reaching an agreement with Turkey -- the only country to recognize northern Cyprus as an independent region -- but his efforts failed. He hopes to be successful in reconciling a harmonious agreement with Turkey during his new term as Cyprus president.
