PM Tsipras:Greece Won't Allow Threat to Land; Warns Turkey after Its Vessel Rams Greek Boat

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras sent a message of defiance to Turkey today (February 15, 2018), following an incident off the Aegean Sea coast of Imia island on February 12 when a Turkish vessel rammed a Greek coast guard boat, according to the Greek Reporter website. (Turkey has in the past claimed it should control Imia Island because it is only about four miles from it, but both the United Nations and the European Union have ruled that Imia comes under the sovereignty of Greece.)

"Greece is not going to allow any challenge to its territorial integrity and its sovereign rights," Tsipras said and warned that "Greece is not playing games."

His comments followed a visit to the Ministry for Shipping where he met the captain and crew of the vessel that was rammed by a Turkish patrol boat.

"You kept calm and keeping calm is bravery," he told the captain of the Offshore Patrol Boat (OPV) Gavdos.
