A Russian fighter jet was shot down by Syrian rebels today (February 3, 2018) in Idlib province in northwestern Syria, near the Turkish border, according to the Jewish Press website.
The pilot ejected, but was killed when he exchanged gunfire with the rebels, the Russian defense ministry reported.
The downing of the plane came as Syrian government forces -- backed by Russian air support and Iranian infantry -- have intensified their offensive in the rebel-held province of Idlib.
In fact, there have been dozens of Russian air strikes in the area over the past 24 hours. Syria's ongoing civil war is now in its seventh year.
