IS Fighters Battle Syrian Rebels in Idlib Province; Defended by Syrian Govt. in Move to Regain Idlib

Some 200 Islamic State (IS) fighters battled Syrian rebels in their controlled northwestern province of Idlib today (February 9, 2018), a monitor group and a rebel commander said, accusing pro-government forces of opening a corridor for the IS terrorists to reach the region, according to the Reuters website.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government forces had allowed IS fighters to leave a besieged pocket of territory at the intersection of Aleppo, Idlib, and Hama provinces, and then go to southern Idlib.

Idlib is the largest chunk of Syrian territory held by rebels opposed to President Bashar al-Assad's government. The rebels have been trying to overthrow Assad since the ongoing Syrian civil war began in March 2011.

Assad has been trying in vain to regain Idlib from the rebels for several months, and has recently used illegal deadly chemicals in his effort, despite the probability of U.S. President Donald Trump slamming Syria's military with scores of missiles for using chemicals, as he did last year.
