EU Warns Turkey Not to Threaten Cyprus Ships; Turkish Ships Hindered Italian Ship Near Cyprus

The EU (European Union) warned Turkey today (February 12, 2018) to refrain from any threat against Cyprus, after a Turkish vessel prevented an Italian ship -- and is now trying to prevent Cyprus ships --  from reaching a drilling zone for gas off the Cypriot coast, according to the EU Observer website.

"Turkey needs to commit unequivocally to good neighborly relations and avoid any kind of source of friction, threat or action directed against a member state," a European Commission spokeswoman said in Brussels.

She insisted that Turkey's behavior "damages good neighborly relations and the peaceful settlement of disputes."

"The EU stresses the need to respect the sovereignty of member states over their territorial sea and airspace," she added, also with reference to regular Turkish incursions in Greek sea and airspace. Indeed, Turkey's incursive activities are a violation of international law.
