Christian Heads Close Church of Holy Sepulchre; As Protest of Israeli Plan to Collect Church Taxes

Christian leaders today (February 25, 2018) took the rare step of closing down the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem -- the site of Jesus' Crucifixion and burial -- in protest of Israeli tax measures and a proposed property tax, according to the Israel National News website.

The decision was made in protest against the bill, allowing the state to expropriate land that the churches have sold since 2010, as well as to protest Jerusalem's intention to collect municipal property taxes.

The aim of the proposed bill is to block the trend of extensive land sales in Jerusalem -- mainly by the Greek Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church -- to private companies.

The other initiative angering church heads is the move by the Jerusalem Municipality to collect property taxes from church assets in the city.
