Russia's Orthodox Head Pays First Visit to Poland; Signs Vow with Polish Cath. Head on Forgiveness

The Christian Broadcast Network website reports today (August 17, 2012) that the head of the Russian Orthodox Church has arrived in Catholic Poland on an historic four-day visit expected to bring the two churches and nations closer together.

Patriarch Kirill received a state welcome yesterday upon arriving at Warsaw airport, noting it was the first visit ever by the head of Russia's Orthodox Church to the country.

Poles and Russians share a long, but largely painful history, including in recent times.

Today, Kirill and Archbishop Jozef Michalik -- the head of Poland's Roman Catholic Church -- signed a joint message asking both nations for mutual forgiveness and reconciliation.
