A federal judge ruled yesterday (August 8, 2012) against two Hawaii women who want to get married -- instead of enter into a civil union -- thus handing a victory to opponents of gay marriage in a state that has been at the forefront of the issue, according to the USA Today website.
U.S. District Judge Alan Kay's ruling sides with Hawaii Health Director Loretta Fuddy and Hawaii Family Forum, a Christian group that was allowed to intervene in the case.
The lawsuit by Natasha Jackson and Janin Kleid argues they need to be married in order to get certain federal benefits.
John D'Amato, attorney for the lesbian couple, said they will appeal the decision to a higher court.
