A billboard erected by a private business in the rural Massachusetts town of Hanson is drawing fire for showing a little girl giving President Obama the middle finger, and criticizing his economic policy, the Raw Story website reports today (August 31, 2012).
"Thanks Obama," the billboard says. "You spent my lunch money, my allowance, my inheritance, 35 years of future paychecks, and my retirement. You jerk."
Some residents are complaining that the sign is offensive, and they worry about the message being sent to their children. Town officials say the sign -- which Robert Sullivan put up in front of the motorcycle accessories store he owns -- has to be taken down, because Sullivan did not get the proper permit needed to put it up.
But Sullivan said through his lawyer that his billboard is protected by the First Amendment, and that he will not take it down. His lawyer -- in a letter to the town -- said the sign was political speech, and therefore must be allowed to stand.
