COMMENTARY: Committing a Hate Crime in America Necessitates Severe Punishment

In a Jewish hate crime this week, a Michigan State University (MSU) student was beaten up and had his mouth stapled shut while he was at a party with about 20 people.

Zachary Tennen -- a 19-year-old sophomore at MSU -- said he was attacked by two men at the party, after he told them he was Jewish. Sadly, none of those attending the party came to Tennen's aid during the attack.

Tennen underwent surgery in a metro Detroit hospital -- as a result of the beating -- to have his jaw wired shut.

We believe that there is no excuse for such a hateful vicious attack being carried out in America today.

The two men who attacked Tennen -- for the simple reason that he is Jewish -- were entirely out of line. They deserve a severe punishment for their brutality -- including serving time in prison -- after they are arrested by police and tried in a court of law.

The U.S. Constitution provides for religious freedom in America; consequently, law enforcement officials in the United States have an obligation to ensure that no American is ever denied this innate freedom.
