The de facto endorsement of the Romney-Ryan ticket by the Catholic hierarchy became a fait accompli yesterday (August 23, 2012), as Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York accepted -- in an unprecedented fashion -- an invitation to offer a benediction on the last day of the Republican National Convention (RNC), according to the Daily Beast website.
The usual practice is for the local bishop to offer the benediction in his diocese.
The reason that Dolan's selection to offer the benediction is critical is because Dolan is in many ways the U.S. leader of the Pope Benedict XVI hierarchy.
Thus, his stature turns a benediction into a political act.
