Vatican Butler Is a Scapegoat, Says Real Leaker; Italian Press Receives Leaks After Butler's Arrest

The Newser website reports today (June 4, 2012) that the Vatican may have arrested the pope's butler -- accusing him of being the source of ongoing leaks of confidential and personal documents to the Italian press -- but he is actually a scapegoat, according to the latest leak of confidential documents.

The Italian newspaper Il Repubblica wrote yesterday that it received a letter and three other documents -- after the butler's arrest -- which reveal the intrigue going on in the Vatican,  and Pope Benedict's lack of control over the chaos.

A letter that appears to be from the real  leaker said butler Paolo Gabriele was the "usual scapegoat," and that the true purpose of the leaks was to "drive out the real culprits from the Vatican," meaning the pope's personal aide, Georg Gaenswein, and Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the secretary of state.

The letter also said it has 300 more documents on the way.
