Court Refuses to Delete "Under God" from Pledge; Atheist Family in Mass. to Appeal Court Decision

The Blaze website reports today (June 11, 2012) that the Middlesex Superior Court in Massachusetts has ruled against an atheist family that has been engaged in a battle to have the words "under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance.

The family -- with the assistance of the American Humanist Association (AHA) -- decided to sue the Acton-Boxborough school system, claiming that the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance with the words "under God" discriminates against their children.

The parents -- who wish to remain anonymous -- are identified only as John and Jane Doe. They have three children in the district -- one in high school and two others in middle school.

David Niosie -- the family's lawyer and the president of the AHA -- had asked the Middlesex Superior Court that the words "under God" be taken out of the expression of loyalty to America. Now, the atheist and humanist communities have united against the court's decision, and plan to continue to fight the matter in a higher court.
