Ukrainian Greek Cath. Priest Suspended 30 Days; Refused to Bury a Man Due to His Church "Debts"

The RISU (Religious Information Service of Ukraine) website reports today (April 9, 2012) that a priest from Ukraine's Lviv Region -- who refused to bury a man for "debts" to the Church -- has been punished.

Fr. Stepan Palii of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) was dismissed from the services in his parish for one month.

Fr. Volodymyr Zhdan -- Chancellor of the Stryi Eparchy of the UGCC -- said, "We have taken into account the fact that the priest, Stepan Palii, admitted his guilt. The father realized that he abused his power."

Fr. Zhdan added, "The father apologized to the bishop for exposing the Church to such criticism, and showed readiness to accept any punishment."
