Phyllis Schlafly to Collegians: Avoid Feminists; Lectures That "Everything They Stand for is Bad"

The Raw Story website reports today (April 6, 2012) that conservative political activist Phyllis Schlafly yesterday gave some advice to students at The Citadel College in South Carolina: Stay away from feminists.

While giving a lecture entitled "Conservative Intellectual Tradition in America," the 87-year-old Schlafly told the all-male audience that "feminist is a bad word and everything they stand for is bad." She also warned against getting into a relationship with a feminist.

"Find out if your girlfriend is a feminist before you get too far into it," she said. "Some of them are pretty. They don't all look like Bella Abzug."

Schlafly is mostly known for her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment, which would have affirmed the equal treatment of men and women. Thanks in part to the work of her organization -- The Eagle Forum -- the Equal Rights Amendment was never ratified by the states. In her lecture, she said that the proposed amendment would have made women eligible for the draft and opened the door to legalizing same-sex marriages.
